On Friday 3 March, many Australians will come together for the Global Climate Strike. This follows the School Strike for Climate in recent years, which saw students from across the country peacefully demonstrate in support of action against climate change. The Victorian strike action on 3 March will take place in Castlemaine.
We understand that the SchoolStrike4Climate Team are organising a further event in Melbourne in the coming months and we are working with them to ensure that you are made aware of the details when they are confirmed.
As with previous demonstrations, you are welcome to miss classes for the day to attend the strike on 3 March, provided that you:
- submit any assignments or other pieces of assessment that are due on the day,
- meet compulsory attendance or other subject requirements, and
- maintain your contribution to activities such as group projects so as not to disadvantage other students.
Classes will continue as scheduled on 3 March and will not be repeated or rescheduled.
It is up to you whether you attend the climate strike; the University will simply make sure that you will not be disadvantaged if you do attend, provided you observe the above guidelines.
La Trobe is serious about supporting our climate. We played a leadership role by being the first Australian university to commit to divesting from fossil fuels and aim to be the first Victorian university to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2029. Climate change is explicitly named in the University’s Strategic Plan 2020-2030 as a global problem that La Trobe will help address.
If you have any questions about attending the climate strike on 3 March, please contact the SchoolStrike4Climate Team.
