Celebrating Carers: National Carers Week 2025

Theme: Recognise. Support. Celebrate.

This October, we shine a light on the incredible 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care to family members or friends. From young carers juggling study and responsibilities, to adults supporting loved ones with complex needs, Carers Week (12 – 18 October) is all about recognising their contributions, raising awareness and saying a heartfelt thank you.

Are you a carer?

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a person with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail due to age. This role can be taken on by anyone, at any time and often, unexpectedly.

Whilst anyone can be a carer, there are over 391,000 young carers in Australia between the ages of 5-25. These are children and young adults who help care for a parent, sibling, grandparent or friend. Their responsibilities might include:

  • Cooking, cleaning, and household tasks
  • Emotional support
  • Managing medications
  • Assisting with mobility or personal care
  • Helping with finances or appointments

While many young carers find the role rewarding, it can also impact their education, social life and wellbeing. Often the role is dynamic and can be either short or long term as well as shared amongst other family members or it can be carried completely alone.

Challenges faced by carers

Caring can be incredibly fulfilling but also demanding. Often, carers tend to put the needs of others first, which can lead to neglecting their own health and wellbeing.

Common challenges include:

  • Burnout and fatigue
  • Mental health impacts
  • Financial stress
  • Social isolation
  • Navigating complex support systems

Support options for carers

Help is available. Carers can access:

  • Carer Gateway: Free national service offering counselling, coaching, respite care and practical tips
  • Young Carer Bursary: Financial support for young carers to stay in education (open once per year)
  • Little Dreamers: counselling, coaching, group programs, peer support and offering A Dream Experience for Young Carers
  • NDIS & My Aged Care: Support for the individual with disability or older adults
  • Parent Pathways: Mentoring and support for carers of young children
  • State-based services: Each state offers tailored programs, concessions, and respite options

Let’s celebrate carers – because they care and that’s extraordinary.
