What is an extension subject?

Shown as (E) on documentation, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) defines Extension Studies (E) as

  • Equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more current first year studies and constituting 20–25 per cent of a full time first year course and does not duplicate a VCE study.
  • Being of a level for a high achieving student and therefore a clear extension on the identified VCE Year 12 study, offering depth and breadth and commensurate in workload with an additional VCE study.
  • Being of a level which will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second year study at the higher education institution in that discipline as part of a Bachelor Degree program.

What is an advanced standing subject?

Shown as (AS) on documentation, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) defines Advanced Standing Studies (AS) as

  • Equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more current first year studies and constituting 20–25 per cent of a full time first year course.
  • Not available in any VCE studies.
  • Providing students with a defined pathway into a tertiary program of study.
  • Being of a level which will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second year study at the higher education institution in that discipline as part of a Bachelor Degree program.
