Other proof of English proficency

As well as English language tests and ELICOS programs, we may also consider other factors when assessing if you meet the language requirements for your course.

English language exemptions

If you’re from one of the following countries and have satisfactorily completed at least five years of continuous (full-time equivalent) education, you may be exempt from providing English language proficiency for your course:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • USA
  • UK
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Singapore (completed at least six years of continuous, full time equivalent education).

However, if you’ve completed an approved secondary qualification, we’ll determine your English language exemption based on the successful completion of  that qualification and if you achieve the required score at the equivalent IELTS level.

Learning in non-English speaking countries

If you’ve studied a tertiary level qualification in a country where English is not the first language, you may still meet our English language proficiency requirements. We may accept this study if the program was delivered, regulated and administered by an institution from one of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America
  • Canada
  • New Zealand.

Employment

If you’re applying for a course that only requires our minimum English language standards, we may consider your work experience when determining if you meet those standards. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

You’ll need to provide documentary evidence showing completion of at least two years full-time work experience in an English-speaking professional work environment in one of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • UK
  • USA
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Canada.

Your work experience needs to have occurred in the two years prior to your commencement at La Trobe. You must also provide a summary of the organisation you worked for and evidence of the duties you carried out.
