SOCIETY AND CULTURE: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

Subject outline

Rapid social and cultural change are now an inevitable part of everyday life, affecting individuals and societies alike. But how do we make sense of these changes? What causes them, and what are their effects on societies in Australia and globally ? And why do some things never seem to change, such as poverty, racism and exclusion? In this subject, students are introduced to the systematic study of society. They are provided with theories and methods that offer new ways of challenging common-sense understandings of modern societies and cultures, so that they can look past the 'spin' to find and assess the facts that shape their daily lives. This subject addresses La Trobe's Global Citizenship Essential. This entails a deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world; being able to recognize and act across cultures and boundaries; and working with diverse communities.
