Subject outline

In this subject, students will acquire practical knowledge of contemporary approaches to the management of quality and safety in health care, and the available evidence of their effectiveness. Students will examine past and present trends in critical incident analysis in health care and the theories, frameworks and methodologies for quality assurance and quality improvement. Clinical governance, measurement of quality, the consumer voice and human factors are explored, building on content covered in other subjects, as well as students experiences, to address the complexity of health care.

01. Analyse learnings from the historical and political development of quality and safety theories in health care and other industries, and apply to contemporary quality frameworks.
02. Examine the challenges facing quality and safety in health care service provision and evaluate clinical risks and the processes and tools used for managing clinical risk.
03. Analyse the components of clinical governance and the requirements for their effective implementation in relationship with clinical care quality.
04. Differentiate the methods of monitoring, measuring and assessing quality and safety in health care organisations.
05. Apply a process redesign method, and evaluate how process improvement should be implemented and monitored to achieve effective and sustained impacts on care quality.
06. Appraise the criteria for a comprehensive approach to the management of quality and safety improvement in organisations, thereby improving the health and wellbeing of all.
