The La Trobe online subject "Service Learning in theCommunity" provides undergraduate students with the opportunity toundertake 100-120 hours of volunteering and service learning placements in acommunity setting - either within Australia or overseas. Students engage in aprofessional setting that promotes the development of active citizenship,social responsibility and in-depth community knowledge. Service learning  includes the opportunityto combine hands-on community service with theoretical platforms ofreflection and evaluation - a skill that enhances students' employability andself-awareness. In self-sourced community placements, students learn tounderstand and meaningfully interact with a variety of factors driving,challenging and enriching local communities.

Special conditions Students cannot enrol in LTU2SLC after Week 32. Depending on the placement, students may be required to arrange (at their own expense) a Working with Children Check and Police Check before enrolment. The Subject Coordinator has final approval over whether an individual research internship is consistent with LTU2SLC. La Trobe researchers are not obliged to accede to student request for an individual research internship. In preparing an individual research internship, students must secure the written approval of a La Trobe researcher, setting out the theme, the time period and the assessment tasks.
