Subject outline

In this subject, students will further develop their health information practice knowledge and skills through engagement in supervised professional practice placements in healthcare and related agencies across the whole-of-health. The purpose of the subject is to enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to practice, and to consolidate learnings from previous professional practice placements. Students will undertake 45 days of placement and complete a range of academic assessments. Regular contact with University supervisors is maintained during placements via telephone, email and on-site visits.

01. Synthesise graduate-entry competencies in the practice of health information management through supervised engagement in activities which build upon academic studies and previous placement and experiences.
02. Analyse the processes for the collection and application of health information for clinical and other purposes at agency level.
03. Critically reflect on current theory and practice and evaluate processes across health care agencies translating knowledge into new contexts.
04. Integrate skills in project and time management including development and achievement of objectives, ability to work autonomously and to demonstrate initiative in work practice.
05. Interrogate health data through extraction and analysis (including ICD-10-AM coding according to state and national protocols.)
06. Collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and communicate appropriately using a wide range of mediums.
07. Demonstrate high professional ethical standards and maintain awareness of the social and ethical implications of professional and personal activities.
