Subject outline

In this subject students are introduced to French history since 1945 through the medium of cinema. All lectures, tutorials and readings are in English. Students are challenged to think about the ways in which we visualise and stage the past; how national memory is re-made through historical film; and how different cinematic genres and techniques open up new ways of approaching history. Themes include forgetting and remembering the German Occupation of 1940-1944; Americanisation; decolonisation; youth; and banlieues .
