Subject outline

This subject is designed to establish a knowledge and skill base for pre-service teachers in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, planning, assessment and reporting in Design and Technologies for secondary students in the junior and middle years of secondary schooling (Years 7-10) as detailed in the Victorian Curriculum F-10 curriculum documentation. The subject is also designed to develop students understanding of contemporary theory, concepts and skills in Design and Technologies as applied in the classroom context with a particular focus on developing the four general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. Theoretical concepts, pedagogical principles and state and national curriculum structures within Design and Technologies are examined and applied in the evaluation, design and implementation of learning resources that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners.

Prerequisites Students must be enrolled in either of the following courses in order to undertake this subject: Masters of Teaching Secondary (EMTCS, EMTCSB, EMTCSW) or Bachelor of Technology Education (EBTE, EBTEB), Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Arts Education (AZAAE), Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Science Education (SZSSE), Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (AZATS), Bachelor of Science & Masters of Teaching Secondary (SZSTS)

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of Design and Technologies education and an in-depth understanding of how students learn in Design and Technologies.
02. Critically analyse, plan and implement a range of Design and Technologies learning and teaching activities and sequences for students in Years 7-10 which involve a variety of pedagogical approaches and resources (including safe and ethical use of resources including the use of data, computational thinking, systems thinking, critical and creative thinking appropriate to state and national curricula.
03. Describe, design, and evaluate a unit of work involving a variety of teaching strategies which cater for individual differences in student learning across the full range of abilities and integrate the four general capabilities in the Victorian curriculum framework, as well as design thinking, systems thinking, computational thinking, and cross curriculum priorities in Design and Technologies Education.
04. Examine the relationships between assessment, feedback and reporting, learning task design, student engagement and understanding in Design and Technologies, and apply to the development and modification of documents
