Subject outline

In this subject we build upon EDU1LLL and EDU2SRW to focus on new learnings, research and understandings in this technological/multimodal world that impact literacy development of students. Key areas of teaching oral language, writing, reading and new literacies will be researched with specific focus on multimodal and multiliteracies in P-10 classrooms, and ICT skills associated with this. There is also an emphasis upon broadening and deepening professional reading of current texts and research to develop understandings of the links between theories, practical strategies and assessments, as well as between oral language and performance, reading and writing. This knowledge and understanding is drawn together in the pre-service teacher's planning for a unit of work that includes the use of multi-layered literature and the teaching of text analyst's role through critical literacy along with assessment of literacy learning to inform teaching and to help us 'read the visual'.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Critically analyse theories and current research in the field of literacy, with a particular emphasis on multiliteracies and the impact of multimodal resources on literacy development for all learners.
02. Students develop a three week unit of work that illustrates how multiliteracies (including performance and multimodal resources can be used effectively in the classroom to develop and extend the literacy of all learners.
03. Students develop assessment tasks and illustrate how they would use formative and summative assessment to assess the multiliteracies (above unit of work and how these could be used to inform future planning and student learning.
