Subject outline

In this subject you will build upon foundation skills acquired in year one by developing skills in a simulated environment. You will learn how to obtain relevant intra oral radiographs, administer local anaesthesia, undertake non-complex restoration of primary and adult teeth and perform non-surgical periodontal instrumentation. You will use the skills and expertise in this subject to progress to clinical application at the beginning of year three.

01. Apply clinical reasoning and judgement in a reflective practice approach to support the development of new skills in a simulated pre-clinical setting
02. Demonstrate a level of competence in obtaining and recording clinical information in a well-organized simulated patient record.
03. Demonstrate a level of competence in non-surgical periodontal instrumentation, direct tooth restoration, intra- oral radiography technique, all within a simulated setting.
04. Demonstrate a level of competence in the administration of local anaesthesia and full arch impressions on a simulated patient in a clinical setting
05. Demonstrate a level of competence following infection control protocols while working on simulated patients in a clinical setting.

Pre-clinical and Clinical Self- assessment and Supervisor Feedback (800 word equiv.) This assessment task is completed every laboratory or pre-clinical session. It allows students to demonstrate their ability to critically analyse the exercise completed. One 45-minute Practical examination (equivalent to 2,000 words) SEM 1 This assessment task gives the students opportunity to demonstrate their pre-clinical skills in periodontics, conservative dentistry and impressions.
