Subject outline

In this subject, we lay the foundation for internet working. Basic building blocks of internet working in terms of two main reference models are introduced. Two main reference models, OSI and TCP/IP are examined in detail mainly by analyzing each layers' functionality and different protocols involved. Few of the critical concepts in network design like, IP addressing, IP Subnetting, VLSM, IP routing, local area network technologies (Ethernet), switching and packet analysis are also introduced with a practical approach as an enabler to perform small network designs.

01. Describe fundamentals of networking and apply this knowledge to solve networking problems.

02. Analyse the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model and TCP/IP models and compare the operation and performance of various layers in each.

03. Design appropriate addressing schemes to solve problems across different network sizes using different approaches.

Activities:
Lectures/webinars on solving IPv4 addressing problems and designing appropriate addressing schemes to different network sizes. This will be followed by practical activities

04. Construct, design and implement Local Area Network (LAN) for small-to-medium sized networks.

Activities:
Lectures/webinars on design and development of networks and devices used in design. This will be followed by practical activities

05. Configure and test industry networking devices that meet network requirements and achieve optimal performance.

Activities:
Lectures/webinars are dedicated to learning about selecting and configuring various network devices functions and wiring standards used in networks. This will be followed by practical activities

06. Use various tools to debug and troubleshoot errors in LANs of different sizes.

Activities:
Lectures/webinars are dedicated to learning about the various tools such as Wireshark to debug and troubleshoot errors in a network. This will be followed by practical activities
