Subject outline


Throughout history the body hasbeen of central concern and preoccupation for artists; transitioning from anidealised sculptural figure in the Ancient World through to its role as a medium in 20th century performance art. In this subject students will explore how the body has been represented, understood and analysed throughout art history in mediums ranging from sculpture, painting, video and performance art. Students will engage with notions of the idealised body and beauty, anatomy and dissection, decoration and fashion, portraiture and identity in the context ofgender, sexuality and ethnicity. Students will learn how the body has playedvarious roles in the art historical cannon by deep investigation andcomparisons of artworks and periods, building a broad knowledge of the role,function and representation of the body throughout history.
