Subject outline

In this subject, students take a journey through 40,000 years of Indigenous settlement in Australia. A series of major themes, including the first settlement of different parts of the continent, interactions with and adaptations to varied and changing environments, technological choices and patterns of economy and land use will be addressed. Particular case studies will be used to focus on evaluating the available archaeological and ethnohistorical information and the way it has been used to provide insights into past ways of life.

Prerequisites Must have completed 180 credit points and must be admitted in the ABARC, ABA, SZAS, AZAHS, LZCOMA, LWLAT AND have completed ARC1THJ, ARC1CIV, ARC2DIG and ARC2LAN or Must be admitted in ABABU, AZAHTS, LZCA, LWLWA and have completed ABS1IAA and ABS2PIA, OR require subject coordinator's approval.

Activities:
Presentation by individuals of the results of group/team discussions after the analysis of Indigenous material culture. Poster assignment.

02. Demonstrate knowledge of the cultural values, awareness and ethical sensitivities towards Indigenous Australians and their archaeological materials across the continent. Appreciate and be sensitive to cross-cultural protocols and language and be able to deal with unfamiliar situations.

03. Identify differences between types of Aboriginal archaeological materials and access the variability within and between them.

04. Interpret temporal and spatial changes in cultural material from a variety of site types.

Activities:
Workshop analysis of lithic artefacts and organic remains from a range of archaeological contexts and sites. PeerWise multiple choice questions.

05. Analyse and interpret archaeological materials including faunal remains and stone artefacts.

Activities:
Laboratory exercises on the identification of animal bones and categories of stone artefacts. Poster assignment.
