CONTEMPORARY HUMAN SERVICES

SWP1CHS

2020

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject examines the various contexts in which contemporary social work and human services practice takes place. Students will begin to develop their understanding of the social work profession, including its values, ethics and practice approaches. They will do so through examining the various 'fields of practice' in which social workers operate, including the types of organisations, programs and policies which comprise these. In broadening their knowledge beyond these immediate fields of practice, students will explore the development of the welfare state and build their understanding of the key political, social, economic and global forces which have shaped the contemporary practice context and which will continue to influence human services and the social work profession into the future. The subject provides important foundation knowledge for subsequent subjects in 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of the course.
