HIGH PERFORMANCE TRAINING FOR SPORT

SPE3HPT

2020

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject provides you with advanced knowledge in exercise physiology to inform the prescription of training, ergogenic practices and athlete monitoring within high-performance sport. You will use authentic training case studies to highlight the important role of physiological knowledge in applied sport. Practical classes will allow you to apply knowledge and develop a range of skills needed to undertake advanced physiological testing and provide scientific support in high-performance sports. Using an evidence-based approach, you will demonstrate an ability to prescribe and deliver training programs for both individuals and teams, based on best-practice principles.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Synthesise knowledge of physiological responses to acute and chronic exercise to appraise training and ergogenic practices specific to high-performance sport.
02. Critically evaluate best-practice guidelines to design and deliver exercise programs for individuals and groups for a range of performance outcomes.
03. Critically interpret physiological data in response to acute and chronic exercise to communicate variations between time-points, individuals and populations.
04. Apply exercise physiology theory to justify the development of testing batteries, training monitoring strategies and exercise programming.
05. Synthesise knowledge and skills across a range of exercise science disciplines to provide holistic development of training programs.
06. Demonstrate competency across a range of practical and technical skills and describe their relationship to key theoretical concepts in sport and exercise science.
