Subject outline

This subject examines contemporary social processes that rupture the fabric of society in dramatic and typically unpredictable ways. Processes of social disruption generate complex effects that are progressive and regressive as well as unevenly experienced. In this subject, you will evaluate the causes and effects of socially disruptive change, such as those associated with new technologies, big data, work, urbanisation, social isolation, political activism, identity issues, and transnational flows of people and capital. In addition, the subject addresses the relationship between the discipline of sociology and the study of social change. You will be asked to think critically about when and why specific forms of social change are labelled disruptive and what the sociological interest in disruption suggests about the contemporary moment.
