This subject introduces students to the philosophical, historical and methodological foundations of psychology providing them with a solid basis for understanding the nature of theoretical development of the discipline. This outcome is achieved by critically examining how theories are developed and used in psychology and examining how these theories are operationalised in experimental contexts. In teams, students will be required to develop and operationalise their own research question and present the results of this enquiry to the class.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Identify and use appropriate information sources to support an oral and written argument with appropriate formatting and referencing schemes acceptable to international standards..
02. Design and conduct a basic research study on a behavioural phenomenon of their choice as a part of a team and present this for discussion with peers.
03. Evaluate and critically analyse the research design, analysis and interpretation of a basic investigation in Psychology.
04. Develop a logical and well supported conclusion for their written assessments based on empirical evidence.
05. Apply the ethical guidelines governing psychological practice and research, and demonstrate this by their own appropriate academic conduct (e.g. avoiding plagiarism and collusion)
06. Apply the understanding of the historical, philosophical and methodological foundations of Psychology to contexts beyond those of psychology itself.
07. Identify and describe potential cultural biases arising from psychological research and assessment methodologies, and suggest solutions to resolve such issues.
