Subject outline

As our living environments change in response to policy, economics, people and technologies, planners assess, determine and transform land uses to meet current and future needs. This increasingly means working with specialised spaces and places that range from contaminated sites, to sporting and entertainment precincts that hold large scale events, and temporary towns associated with industry or disaster reconstruction sites. This requires a historical and socio-cultural understanding of spaces and places to ensure the proposed qualities and layout of a place works well and contributes to the quality of life for the people that experience it. This extends far beyond narrow aesthetics to questions of safety, comfort, economics, social equity, ecological performance as well as appearance. This subject aims to develop your knowledge of and skills in site planning and urban design through the study of theory and practice. The course places a strong emphasis on practical projects and includes participation in a structured site planning-urban design project.
