Subject outline

Australia first formalised environmental impact assessment in the 1970s. Now, countries throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, etc. have implemented their own systems to identify, assess and manage the environmental effects of development. Furthermore, integrated impact assessments that also include social, cultural and health matters are becoming more prevalent. Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) as a framework, students will examine key concepts like: sustainable development, responsible consumption and production, and affordability, to critically analyse the underlying assumptions that direct administrative, market-based and community-governance responses to impact assessment. To ground these concepts in practice, students will investigate how impact assessment is governed, by tracing how environmental, economic and social impacts of proposed developments are considered in decision making processes. Students will gain knowledge and skills that enable them to contribute to, and critique, integrated impact assessment processes and reports in the local and international context.
