Subject outline
In this subject we explore the idea of community/ies using multiple perspectives, since our composition of "communities" is itself changing in our rapidly globalising world due to migration, cultural assimilation, virtual citizenry, etc. The different components that make up communities are discussed while referring to the history of community development agendas in planning. Students will engage with notions of participatory citizenship and empowerment while examining how these community engagement has been normalised and codified in political and planning processes. The primary focus will be on how communities articulate notions of development and create sustainable and vibrant places. Students will investigate what community development is, how it gets done and who does it; they learn basic techniques and approaches to practice. In this fieldwork-based subject, students apply concepts human rights, super-diversity, health and development within a planning context to produce social and spatial policy.
