Subject outline

This subject provides an advanced introduction to some of the most important values, concepts, and theories being debated in contemporary political philosophy, with a particular focus on freedom, justice, and equality. Framed by the work of a range of influential modern philosophers, students will explore the normative underpinnings of a range of contemporary political controversies relating to topics such as democracy, hate speech, distributive inequality, libertarianism, race, multiculturalism, and gender and the family. Throughout the semester, there will be an emphasis on student learning through a close engagement with key philosophical texts and dynamic class discussion. The subject is strongly recommended to students who wish to further their understanding of the relationship between politics and philosophy, clarify their own thinking on contemporary political issues, and sharpen their capacity to advance and evaluate political arguments.
