Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject expands on the topics presented in the subject Introduction to Microbiology. Some of the most important microbial diseases affecting humans will be studied. A major area of focus is the use of chemotherapeutic agents (bacterial antibiotics, antifungal agents, antiviral agents, and disinfectants) to treat and control microbial diseases. This will help explain why certain classes of drugs and antibiotics are useful against some microorganisms but not others.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

Graduate Capabilities

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacology of drugs for infective diseases, specifically the actions at the cellular and organ levels, and clinical effect on the patient.
02. Relate the action of drugs against various microbial antigens and targets and their capacity to overcome microbial defence mechanisms.
03. Describe and explain the relationship between drug actions and therapeutic outcomes, specifically in the amelioration of clinical conditions related to infective diseases.
04. Describe and explain the relationship between drug actions and therapeutic outcomes, specifically in the amelioration of clinical conditions related to infective diseases.
05. Anticipate and rationalize interaction between drugs (including over-the-counter (OTC drugs)
06. Resolve a case study around a clinical scenario including researching drugs and diseases.
07. Demonstrate the capacity to relate the mechanisms of gene transfer in micro-organisms to consequent resistance to antimicrobial pharmacotherapy.
08. Demonstrate capacity to relate procedures for the testing of effectiveness of antimicrobial substances to the problem of the spread of microbial resistance.
