Subject outline

In this subject students develop oral health instruction skills and learn how to incorporate motivational interviewing into patient management. Students will develop new skills in non-surgical periodontal instrumentation and adhesive restorations in deciduous and permanent teeth. Students will also develop initial information gathering skills, clinical observation techniques and treatment planning skills and apply them in a clinical setting. Other skills include inquiring on and documenting pain history, differential diagnosis, pulp pathology and radiographic practical skills and assessment. Theories of minimal intervention and clinical prevention of dental diseases will be linked to clinical p procedures. Students are introduced to intra-oral local anaesthesia (theory and practice)and will learn to develop new clinical skills in the areas of pulptherapy, preformed metal crowns, deciduous exodontia and orthodontics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Use motivational interviewing strategies to promote oral health in patients.
02. Perform care and treatment in deciduous and permanent teeth in a supervised clinical setting, applying minimal intervention strategies
03. Interpret the findings of common dental radiographs.
04. Gathering relevant information using clinical observation techniques and in collaboration with other dental health care providers. Diagnosis and plan dental care (treatment).
05. Administer intra oral local anaesthesia.
06. Apply understanding of the relationship between general health, oral health and the medical history to ensure, correct dental procedures for medically compromised patients.
07. Apply broad skills in preventative, periodontal and restorative care, including advanced debridement techniques, pulp therapy and exodontia.
08. Use skills in oral health education and patient management.
