CARE OF THE NEONATE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
NSM4NSN
2020
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject you will build on earlier theoretical and clinical experiences of the normal newborn, and be introduced to the common conditions of the more complex neonate, that may require admission to the special care nursery. You will encounter and learn to recognise the conditions, and gain the necessary knowledge and skills, to provide appropriate care for the premature, sick or 'at risk' infant. Issues relating to parenting infants, who have complex needs, will be explored, and you will build on their interpersonal skills when examining concepts of attachment, grief and loss. The relationships between maternal conditions and their effects on the infant, and the impact of the birth of a premature or sick infant on the health industry, the local community and society are also considered.
