Subject outline
In this subject, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of midwifery practice in the antenatal and intrapartum periods. Using a primary health care philosophy, students will develop skills and attributes for providing woman-centred care during pregnancy, labour and birth based on contemporary evidence based guidelines. The focus of this subject will be on women experiencing a normal pregnancy, labour and birth. Students will build on their knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and psychosocial concepts to cultivate the ability to provide safe and effective midwifery care. This subject enables students to further develop reflective practice, critical thinking and clinical decision making skills, via a flexible model, with relevant face-to-face lectures and workshops and supported by clinical practicum.
