Subject outline

In this subject you will reflect on aspects of your own cultural self-awareness to advance your knowledge and skills in providing effective and safe care to Indigenous Australian families in the maternity context. You will explore Australian Indigenous history, concepts related to traditional and contemporary Indigenous cultures, the rights of individuals and groups to self-determination, and consider how culturally safe midwifery practices can contribute to closing the gap in Indigenous health disadvantage. The skills gained in this subject will enable you to recognise how socio-cultural diversity may impact maternity outcomes equity and access. This subject is delivered via a blended learning approach comprising face-to face teaching, workshops and online modules.
