Subject outline

In this subject you will reflect on aspects of your own cultural self-awareness to advance your knowledge and skills in providing effective and safe care to Indigenous Australian families in the maternity context. You will explore Australian Indigenous history, concepts related to traditional and contemporary Indigenous cultures, the rights of individuals and groups to self-determination, and consider how culturally safe midwifery practices can contribute to closing the gap in Indigenous health disadvantage. The skills gained in this subject will enable you to recognise how socio-cultural diversity may impact maternity outcomes equity and access. This subject is delivered via a blended learning approach comprising face-to face teaching, workshops and online modules.

01. Evaluate health inequality, the factors contributing to it, and ways to close the gap in birth outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous mothers.
02. Engage in culturally appropriate communication to facilitate respectful therapeutic relationships, and support partnerships with Indigenous families, health professionals, organisations and communities.
03. Analyse interconnections between physical, social, historical, political and cultural factors and their impact on perinatal health outcomes by understanding Indigenous Australian concepts of health and healing.
04. Engage in personal and professional reflection of beliefs and attitudes in relation to working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, babies and families.
05. Critically analyse cultural safety and its role in improving maternal health outcomes for Indigenous Australians and influencing midwifery practice.
