Subject outline

You will build on the foundation knowledge and skills pregnancy, birth & postnatal care with women with common childbearing complexities. You will extend your knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, normal pregnancy, labour & birth & puerperium by examining the physiological cause & consequences of most common childbearing complexities including diabetes, medical co-morbidities, blood group incompatibilities and post term pregnancy. Basic fetal development is explored, and the factors that can interrupt fetal development. Using contemporary evidence-based guidelines, students will develop the skills & knowledge to provide safe and effective care to women experiencing common complexities. Studies incorporate safe competent care of the childbearing journey & the benefits of continuity of care for women experiencing complexities. The scope of practice of the midwife is covered. Clinical skills used in the provision of care to women experiencing common complexities will be consolidated.
