Subject outline

This subject is aimed at developing students awareness of and skills in intercultural communication through an exploration of theories and research relating to language, culture and intercultural communication. Students will learn about the how language use shapes and is shaped by culture. Students will be asked to apply their newly acquired knowledge of concepts such as politeness, face, cultural schemas, Discourses and language/cultural ideologies to the analysis of actual real-world communication. Additionally, they will critically examine literature on intercultural communication and explore how this research comes to bear on a range of intercultural communication scenarios which they will realistically encounter in their personal or professional lives
