LCR3SCJ

2020

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

Images of crime arrest us. Whether at the movies or on screens at home, and whether fictionalised or documentary, crime on the screens entice us. This subject takes seriously screens as a cultural artefact of law and crime and examines the relationship between law, crime and screens through a combination of cinema screenings and face-to-face seminars, guided by readings accessed online. By exploring questions of representation and medium through topics such as consuming foreign crime, the CSI-effect, safe crime series, screens in trials, genocide films, technology facilitated sexual violence, and documentaries, students will develop sophisticated analytical skills necessary to critically assess the role and use of screens in relation to law and crime.
