Subject outline
This subject examines ethical issues in criminal law and its institutions. It raises questions of to whom accountability is due, whether / when it is ethical to break the law, and what mechanisms there are for accountability. The subject is structured around a number of case studies such as knowledge acquisition in relation to crime and justice, wrongful convictions, and accountability in relation to institutional harm. After completing this course, students will be able to critically assess ethical dilemmas that may arise in the practices of criminal law and will have gained knowledge on different mechanisms of accountability.
