Subject outline

In this subject students locate their knowledge of the professional practice of teaching within the context of the legal and ethical environment in which they, as teachers, will operate. Students will develop an understanding of the sources of law and of legal and non-legal obligations, including ethics, with which they must comply as teaching professionals. Students will develop an advanced understanding of the legal and ethical obligation to maintain their skills and knowledge and to maintain professional networks. Students will engage in a series of case studies through which they will critically analyse the application of legal and non-legal principles and practices to the physical and psychological safety of students and others in the school environment, the safe, responsible and ethical use of IT in learning and teaching, responsible and confidential interactions with the school community and the processes, limitations and consequences of risk analysis.

01. Examine and develop advanced understanding of the legislative, common law and ethical context in which effective, sensitive and confidential engagement of parents and carers in the educative process occurs.

02. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of legislative requirements to maintain student safety and develop and evaluate strategies that support students' physical and psychological well-being and safety

03. Critically analyse legislative and ethical frameworks in which ICT in learning and teaching occurs and advanced understanding of strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.

04. Demonstrate critical understanding of the professional learning needs of teachers to improve practice, including an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and the appropriate sources of professional learning.

05. Develop knowledge and understanding of the legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes affecting teaching and teachers

06. Critically understand the necessity for teachers to broaden their professional knowledge and practice through interaction with external professionals and community representatives.
