Subject outline

The criminal justice system refers to the collection of state institutions and agencies responsible for the processing of persons accused of committing a crime or convicted of a crime. This subject offers an advanced examination of the criminal justice process. Emphasis is placed on the role, discretions, and responsibilities of participants and decision-makers, as well as on the various checks and balances designed to prevent or correct errors. Students will be encouraged, through in-depth studies of miscarriages of justice, to critically evaluate the pressure points in the system and examine potential reforms.
