Subject outline

In this subject, students study the causes and characteristics of human problems as well as proffered solutions. Through a focus on the international dimension of political, economic and cultural life, factors that lead to conflict and insecurity will be explored. In addition, the extent to which environmental, socio-political and economic changes contribute to conflict and instability and the successes and failures of mechanisms designed to address them will be studied. Topics will correspond with contemporary issues and may include the movement of peoples, human rights violations and climate change and cross-border dispute resolution. In addition, the manner in which international law and its institutions have shaped the discourse, facilitated peace, improved security and access to justice will be considered. Students will also have the opportunity to enhance their research, writing and oral communication skills through specially designed learning activities and assessments.
