Subject outline

With growing government, industry and public focus on environmental sustainability, Environmental and Natural Resource Law are of increasing relevance for legal practitioners. Within this subject, students will address a number of specific environmental issues including: biodiversity protection, climate change, water governance and mining. Students will consider basic environmental principles, the economic and social factors that continue to shape the law in this area and analyse international and Australian regulatory approaches to environmental protection. The subject also examines the distribution of authority for environmental governance between the Commonwealth, State and local governments, processes of strategic environmental planning, development approvals and environmental impact assessment and environmental litigation.
