Subject outline

The focus of this subject is community legal practice. Students work on real client files (under the supervision of a legal practitioner) assisting community legal centres and local Non-Government Organisations (NGOs). Practical legal skills of communication (interviewing and legal writing), legal research, file management and working in a team are developed together with an understanding of the ethical and practical aspects of legal practice. Students are encouraged to reflect on the adequacy of the law within an access to justice framework. Students spend one day of legal placement each week in addition to weekly seminars, and maybe required to complete out-of-hours work to meet deadlines.
