Subject outline

Students in this subject develop and edit content for web publication. The subject introduces students to the basics of producing journalism with smart phones and mobile devices, web design, and the skills necessary to create and prepare graphics for the web. Over the course of the subject, students develop and maintain a blog and are given the opportunity to develop their writing and research skills. This subject also introduces students to journalistic uses of social media. No specialist computer programming or design skills are required for entry into this subject.

01. Critically evaluate and synthesise arguments in online content and show a readiness to inform and revise assumptions and one's own views when appropriate, and to apply web standards and usability principles.

02. Demonstrate ability to locate and utilise freely available technical documentation to extend and enhance online user experiences.

03. Identify best practice in web design and locate effective fixes and/or workarounds for common problems, and create effective user navigation for a website.

04. Locate and utilise authoritative technical documentation on web markup and usability data to create a website prototype, locate, identify and link to online sources to use as evidence in support of written work.

05. Write and publish short articles (i.e. around 300 500 words on a theme for an online readership and promote such writing through freely available social media platforms; demonstrate/show evidence of efforts to engage with audiences and publish blog content on an external website.
