Subject outline
This subject aims to provide a deep knowledge of both theory and practice of journalism in Australia and different parts of the world. It includes a detailed overview and critical examination of the working life of journalists. Particular attention is given to the way that journalism as a profession has changed from the 20th to the 21st century. The subject will feature guest lectures from established journalists and those with journalism expertise working in academia. Themes to be explored will include: How do we define journalist and journalism in the 21st century? What qualities make for a successful journalist? What skills and experiences are required for a successful career? How is journalism funded and what are its economic challenges? What are key ethical considerations for journalists and how is journalism a counter example to fake news? The subject also examines the role of data and investigation in reporting and provides practical skills in interviewing and feature writing. It explores different theoretical approaches to the role of journalists in democracies and critically questions notions such as the 'Fourth Estate' and the public's right to know.
