Subject outline
Japanese for Asian Literacy is designed to give third year students with no prior knowledge the opportunity to learn Japanese as an elective subject. The subject is designed to give students the chance to learn an Asian language and its culture in an exciting and academic environment. The subject focuses on contemporary spoken and written Japanese. Students are provided with the ability to communicate in Japanese in various situations that they may encounter in Australia and Japan. They learn to read and write the hiragana and katakana scripts as well as 45 kanji and thus learn to read and write at an elementary level. They also acquire socio-cultural competence and engage in research pertaining to Japanese society so as to gain Asia literacy.
