This is an introductory level language subject focusing on contemporary spoken and written Japanese. Students are provided with the ability to communicate in Japanese in various situations that they may encounter in Australia and Japan. Students learn to read and write the hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as 45 kanji and thus learn to read and write at an elementary level.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Learn to interact in Japanese. Specifically to exchange greetings, introduce oneself, speak about family and professions and one's daily life.
02. Learn to read and write hiragana and katakana as well as 45 kanji. To learn to read and write simple sentences.
03. Participation, which contributes to a cohesive group dynamic and facilitates learning the target language.
04. Integration of discrete learning - the four components of language learning: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, to produce a new meaningful whole.
05. Acquire socio-linguistic and socio-cultural competencies.
