GONE BUSH: AUSTRALIAN IDENTITY AND RURAL MYTH

HUS3GBP

2020

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

Bush myths have played an important role in the construction and maintenance of Australian identity, despite the prominence of urban centres in the colonisation of Australia. Students examine how and why the Australian bush has been associated with mythic and authentic white Australian identities. These identities were defined against the city and overlooked Aboriginal people. Australian rurality is examined as a set of experiences and ideas produced, distributed and consumed in the bush and beyond. Students participate in a four-day field trip based at La Trobe's Albury Wodonga (AW) campus. The field trip includes site visits to the "Man From Snowy River Bush Festival" at Corryong and other local sites that link to the subject focus on rural culture and rural sustainability. This field trip incurs additional costs, including transport to Albury Wodonga, accommodation, food, tickets and group bus travel to site venues. Field trip dates and costs will vary year to year. Students who withdraw from the subject can only request a refund prior to the census date.
