In this subject you will use the principles of health systems analysis and design learned in previous subjects to explore technical requirements and processes surrounding the introduction of electronic health records (EHRs).Using an enquiry-based learning approach, you will develop an in-depth understanding of design, structural and operational issues related to EHRs such as: EHR structures and architectures, interoperability, privacy and security, person and provider identification, clinical terminologies, clinical decision-support systems, and large data set query and analysis using SQL and business intelligence tools.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Describe the recent evolution of and current policy related to the electronic health record (EHR), along with supporting technologies, both in Australia and other countries
02. Apply EHR standards, architectures and structures in health service implementations, including terminologies (SNOMED), structures (OpenEHR archetypes), communications (HL7), and security (public key infrastructure).
03. Apply structure query language (SQL to select and extract clinical and administrative health data
04. Discover relationships within massive health datasets, and communicate results
05. Design basic protocol-based and clinical decision support systems.
