Subject outline

In this subject you analyse, interpret and use coded and non-coded health data beyond the treatment and disease/operation classification stages. Key emphases include the identification, critical evaluation and objective uses of health data in epidemiological and clinical research; health data and statistics applications in health care management and clinical decision-making; speciality performance indicators; identification and resolution of regulatory, ethical and management issues surrounding registries, health databases and clinical trials; and evaluating the quality , integrity and comparability of coded data and their statistical outcomes. You will become competent in health data analytics through analysing, critiquing, applying and advising upon health data in clinical, epidemiological, and healthcare management environments, and in the context of state and national population health monitoring.

01. Identify and critically assess research designs, and techniques for the collection, analysis, reporting, applications and evaluation of health data and information beyond the patient/client treatment and disease and operation classification stages.
02. Evaluate and report on health data for clinical and related decision-making.
03. Examine the principles and processes of establishing, managing and analysing data in specialised clinical and epidemiological databases and registries, including the legislative, privacy and ethics-related requirements.
04. Evaluate key data quality issues, and management protocols and functions, in specialised clinical and epidemiological settings.
05. Analyse the quality of coded and other administrative data and their statistical outcomes in a clinical or observational epidemiological study.; and provide expert advice to clinicians and researchers on this data.
