Subject outline

In this subject you will undertake theoretical studies at the University, and a three-week (equivalent) supervised, professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of an allocated, regional healthcare facility. You will achieve practice competencies and reinforce professional discipline knowledge. You will undertake key functions on placement to gain understanding of the management, informatics, data analysis, and clinical classificatory roles of hospital health information managers. Prior to placement, students are introduced to health information management, health information science, and health informatics via classroom teaching and extensive readings. Regular contact between students and La Trobe University Academic Supervisors is maintained during the placement via the University's Learning Management System, telephone, on-site visits, and email communications.

01. Compare the organisational structure and functions of Health Information Services and demonstrate how these affect the role of the health information manager, systems, procedures, and day-to-day staff and departmental management.
02. Explain the capture, use, and reporting of clinical information applied to support patient/client care, and associated privacy issues.
03. Explain the operational processes of health records management and patient/client information systems.
04. Describe the clinical governance and quality management activities of the Health Information Service.
05. Demonstrate: (i. disease and procedure classification skills, using patient records; and (ii. a practical understanding of casemix-based systems with particular regard to DRG assignment.
06. Maintain high professional ethical standards and demonstrate awareness of the social and ethical implications of professional and personal activities.
07. Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviours and competencies following a professional placement within the Industry.
