Subject outline

In this subject you develop an introductory working knowledge of the fundamental conventions and rules for classification of diseases and health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-AM) and the Australian Classification for Health Interventions (ACHI). You develop an understanding of the complexities of the classification process. They develop skills in medical record abstraction and interpretation to support the application of health classification systems. Students develop competency in classificatory practice within the parameters of expected industry timeframes and levels of accuracy.

02. Interpret the medical record to identify and further clarify diagnoses and interventions.
03. Abstract from the medical record the appropriate conditions, diagnoses and interventions required for the classification process.
04. Apply the Australian Coding Standards to accurately code inpatient episodes of care.
05. Apply the standards and conventions of health classification within a time frame that aligns with industry expectations.
