In this subject, students are introduced to the terminology, diseases, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relating to each body system as well as to terms used in specialist areas of medicine, surgery, pathology, imaging, nursing and allied health. Students will learn to interpret simple medical documentation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Identify and define the meaning of a range of medical words, anatomical terms, acronyms and abbreviations that describe diagnostic, procedural and additional terms related to body structure, function and disease process.
02. Apply knowledge of medical word part definitions and their combinations, to correctly define, build and use medical terms in context.
03. Understand the basic structure and function of parts of the body and associated disease conditions, symptoms, surgical terminology, investigations, treatments and therapies.
04. Differentiate between symptoms, diseases and treatments relevant to different body systems.
05. Demonstrate speaking skills in the language/vocabulary of medicine.
06. Demonstrate spelling skills in the language/vocabulary of medicine.
07. Analyse simple medical documentation, such as Discharge summaries, Operation Reports and Case Studies.
