HCS1CDH

2020

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

What is 'normal' communication? Who can be considered to have a communication 'disability'? In this subject, you are encouraged to critically examine and consider the social construction of communication disability. You will consider how beliefs about communication disorders differ over time and across cultures, and how the lived experience of communication disabilities also varies. Through online lectures, interviews, and resources, you will learn about treatments, stigma, and history through the prism of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. The range of communication disorders considered in this subject include stuttering, cleft palate, autism, deafness, hearing loss, otitis media in indigenous populations, communication after a stroke, and other hearing disorders. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through an individual written assignment, an online quiz, and a group multimedia assignment.
