Subject outline

In this capstone subject students will extend their discipline-specific knowledge and skills, and their skills in strategic communication through the opportunity to work within an internal consultancy based at La Trobe University. Students are introduced to real-world communication challenges through interactions with community and non-profit organisations and will be tasked with developing a communication plan to disseminate information on a pressing health- or science-related issue that will reach a key target audience.

01. Demonstrate an ability to create a communication tool for a non-scientific audience that is designed to have a positive and significant impact on improving scientific and/or health literacy in the community, and, justify with logical argument the choice of topic, target audience, and mode of communication.
02. Demonstrate personal and professional responsibility by explaining best practice for building and managing successful teams, actively contributing to the building and ongoing management of a team, and effectively evaluating the team dynamics.
03. Demonstrate knowledge and practice of appropriate ethical conduct relevant to your chosen area of science and/or health by articulating the context and relevance to a non-scientific audience.
04. Demonstrate an ability to reflect on and evaluate the potential effectiveness, significance, and impact of the communication piece produced against the requirements described in the client brief
