Subject outline
This interdisciplinary subject enables better understanding of ourselves and of our relations to others. We examine how gender is not simply one thing; it is always situated in relation to other differences, such as race, class, sexuality or disability. Beginning with ways sex and race interact in Australia, the subject asks how people develop diverse forms of belonging within systems of social power and knowledge. We question taken for granted assumptions about identity formation so that differences can be better negotiated in professional and institutional contexts. Materials include readings, film clips, historical texts, personal stories, statistics, and advertisements. The subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential, entailing a deep appreciation of how choices we make affect the natural, economic, social, political and cultural systems in which sex, gender and diversity becomes significant now and in the future. In doing so, we aim to promote social justice.
